Special effects (FX) are used in films, television, and theater to simulate real world or imagined events that are too expensive, dangerous or otherwise impossible to create. Special effects are created through photographic effects, mechanical devices, and computer graphic simulations ("visual effects").

New movie production studios have opened or announced opening studios right here in Michigan. Major movie production studios in combination with local Michigan special effects and computer generated imagery (CGI) companies, will generate many new career openings within this field. In modern films, special effects are almost always used in some form. Special effects companies divide the services they offer into three main categories, optical, mechanical, and CGI effects.
