About “True West”

True West, by Sam Shepard, tells the story of two brothers. Austin, a “successful” young man with a family and a budding screenwriting career house-sits for his mother who is away on vacation. Austin’s brother Lee, an alcoholic, thief and a failure, happens to return home while Austin is watching the house. The play explores the relationship of this polar pair when Saul Kimmer, a big Hollywood producer, picks up an idea for a screenplay that Lee pitches during a golf outing. When Saul drops Austin’s romance story for Lee’s Western, the two brothers battle between combining forces and killing each other. True West drives through moments of compelling drama and comedy.

True West is being produced, directed and designed by Grand Valley students and alumni. The project first began when Chuck Fortenbacher, a Grand Valley actor/director, organized the production elements for a play that he would produce and direct independently of the Grand Valley stage, as well as downtown Grand Rapids production companies. The focus for this group of up and coming thespians is on making your own opportunities.
