Her mother is a drug addict and hooker, is verbally and physically abusive, and is grooming Apple to follow in her footsteps. Apple knows the streets, alleys and sleazy motels like the back of her hand, but wants more from her life. She makes the decision to run away from her mother and embark on a quest to find her father, Tom Fitzpatrick, a wealthy Wall Street Broker. After finding him and spending several days staying with him, she discovers that she has become pregnant by a loser punk she met on a train while searching for Tom. This punk now wants nothing to do with her. Tom’s wife Joanna treats Apple as nothing more than gutter trash, and has a big hand in forcing her out of Tom’s house because of the pregnancy, and Apple’s choice to keep the baby. Apple runs away again, and is eventually taken under the wing of Father McCarthy, the chaplain of the local hospital after almost getting herself killed. He offers to let Apple live at a shelter for pregnant young women run by a spiritual woman named Kathy. It is there that Apple begins to hesitantly connect with the other girls who are in the same quagmire as she, and gradually begins to make a family for herself.
